And now, I buy Civilization IV… for the Mac

Cheaper on the PC, possibly even less buggy.

So why, especially given my past posting on the “death” of OS X, would I buy this game on the Mac?

I have a shiny, relatively new, PC that plays all games I could ever dream of (I just acquired Outrun 2006 on it, because they don’t provide an Xbox 360 version, damn them!!! I even bought a *cabled* 360 controller – i.e. PC compatible – just to play things like this… oh, and Geometry Wars ;)

The truth is, that if companies actually went to the trouble of releasing a Mac version of games at the same time as the Windows counterparts, I would never – yep, never – have bought a PC at all. Not even for work.

As I was deciding which version of Civ IV to get (after months of procrastination, I might add), I was as surprised as anyone that I decided to pay *more* – for the Mac version.

This implies that there should surely be huge market for anything better than the damn Windows platform, and the lumbering monster that is Vista. Oh yes, Vista… I know a bit about this. Not only do I have it here at home, but I am in actual fact – and I was told this by my “masters” – the bone fid?

In Other News: Amiga and Atari ST To Wed

Okay, maybe not. But reading this:

Mario and Sonic to race the 100m

makes the idea seem somehow plausible.

Hell is now officially a bit chilly…

I have my Nintendo Wii

I have now collected my Nintendo Wii. After visiting Gamestation at midnight last night I have now got my new toy and it is at home. Unfortunately it is a Christmas present from my wife so I can not play on until Christmas day. But I am still over the moon that I know I have one. Has anybody else out there managed to get their hands on a Wii on launch day?

Pictures now added as requested.

Nintendo Impress At E3 (Lot’s Of Wii News)

Well they have done it! Yesterday Nintendo had their press conference at E3 and boy did they deliver. They told us that the analogue stick add on to the controller will also have motion detection for the Wii. The controller will feature a speaker. And there are 27 games to play at the E3 show!!!

Nintendo did not worry about realise dates and prices, instead they just showed us people playing the games! And after Sony’s crap show of the crap PS3 yesterday this was really stunning! Nintendo still know how to play the gaming market and with the Wii they have created something truly amazing.

Of all the games they showed off I am most looking forward to Red Steel, Wii Sports also looks good.

I’m sure I will post more here in time, but for now check out the Official Wii Site

Nintendo make a BIG mistake (Nintendo Wii)

Nintendo have made the biggest mistake in gaming history! They have change the name of their next console currently known as the “Revolution” to the “Nintendo Wii“, pronounced “we”. Everybody liked the code name Revolution and now they have given the console a crap name for no reason. I will of course still buy one on the day of launch as it will be the best console of its generation. I will just continue to call it a Nintendo Revolution as this is a much better name!!!

What do you all think?

The Next Generation Console Wars

OK the next “Gen Console Wars” have already begun, Microsoft already have their Xbox 360 out, although the lunch went a bit bumpy with reports of overheating consoles.

Today Sony have taken a big fall anouncing that the Playstion 3 will not be available until Novemeber, and that is a Japan launch date. The US and Europe will have to wait even longer for the next Playstion console.

So that leaves my personal favourite Nintendo. Those of you who know me, know I am a Nintendo Fan, but even those who are not fans must be able to see the potential of the Nintendo Revolution. With the Sony anouncment it looks like the Revolution could be out before the Playstation 3, and that could help Nintendos sales figures!

What do you all think???

Is Gaming Like Drug Addiction?

There is much garbage spouted about the damaging nature of computer games, and the terrible effect they have on our children’s personalities, etc.

This article demolishes some of the more common nonsense spouted by certain self appointed experts on the subject.

Will someone please think of the children!!!

World of Warcraft – and what it REALLY teaches us…

Fascinating article that has much to say about the genuinely far reaching extent to which a well-designed game can develop life-long skills… or wreck them:

http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060222/sirlin_01.shtml

The most intriguing question here is actually… does World of Warcraft, the single most successful (in terms of active subscriptions) MMOG that there has ever been, actually teach lessons that could be damaging in the real world?

I am inclined to say: OF COURSE NOT!

But… on the other hand, my days in Everquest taught me much about genuine real-world leadership. That game rewarded players with progress on the sheer strength of natural leadership abilities… and quickly destroyed those would-be leaders who simply talked up a good fight. (I also learned I prefer to be led by genuine genius, than to confidently lead a swathe of idiots ;-)

What do you think?

Nintendo DS Gets Me Hyped About Mario Kart Again

The latest game in the Mario Kart series has just been released. Mario Kart DS is being hyped as being the best Mario Kart games so far. Until today I was not convinced, but now all I can say is WOW!

Last week one of my fellow work colleagues came back from lunch announcing he had just bought a Nintendo DS and Mario Kart DS. We got chatting and I realised I had owned every Mario Kart game to date and enjoyed them all. I don’t still own them all due to the fact i have sold my SNES and N64, but I play Mario Kart Double Dash on my Gamecube and Mario Kart Super Circuit on the GBA on a regular basis. In fact I bough Mario Kart Super Circuit as it reminded me of the SNES version. This colleague and I chatted some more and agreed to bring our GBA SP’s in this week and a link cable so we could play Mario Kart Super Circuit at lunch. Playing this game in multiplayer reminded me how good this series of games is!

After a few wins a looses I got offered the chance to play a couple of levels on Mario Kart DS. I had heard a lot about this game and when it was released a little while ago I nearly rushed out and bought a Nintendo DS just for this game. I played one of the new tracks and one of the Gamecube tracks, it has a great retro mode where you can play SNES, N64, GBA, and Gamecube tracks! My initial opinions are that this is the best game in the series, and if I was not waiting for the New DS Lite to be released I would be rushing out to buy a Nintendo DS now!

Looking back on playing the Gamecube & GBA in multiply recently, both racing and in battle mode, and having experienced the DS version, I now realise that Mario Kart is one of the best series of games in console history! If you have not yet experienced this fun yet then go out and buy a Mario Kart game and you will have hours of fun.

Now please Nintendo hurry up and release the DS Lite, and then start working on writing us a nice Mario Kart game for the Nintendo Revolution!
