Mercury Music Prize 2006

I am posting after watching this years Mercury Music Prize on BBC 4. I’m annoyed that the Arctic Monkeys won. I have always followed the Mercury Music Prize as it is one of the few awards that really reflects what is going on in the music industry every year. This year had some great acts including The Editors (who I wanted to win), Thom Yorke (everybody knows I am a massive Radiohead fan), and Lou Rhodes (who is the ex vocalist from Lamb). Even the inclusion of Jazz artist Zoe Rahman and Isobel Campbell (who used to be a member of Belle & Sebastian) impressed me on the night as their songs were better then I was expecting. But among all this talent and diversity for the Arctic Monkeys (obvious big indy band of the year), to go on to win I was upset. Maybe it is because I am not a Arctic Monkeys fan, but in previous years I have not been a fan of the winner but still respected the judges decision. I think the difference this year is I feel the judges voted for the Arctic Monkeys as it was the obvious choice.

Maybe I am wrong but I would love know what other people think. As people know I am passionate about my music and this years Mercury Music Prize has certainly got me passionate about music again, so maybe it worked!

Well, I am not that familiar with most of these… not in their present musical forms anyway. So I will reserve judgement.

Arctic Monkeys – no idea what they are like either :-/ Time to try some tracks out…
